Every aspect of the culture is highly influenced by their native "Taino" heritage; although many traditions, language and religion have been taken from the spanish.

Although religious freedom is consecrated in the dominican constitution, 95% of the population is Roman Catholic. Spanish is the official language; however, among some communities and touristic areas, english, german, french, italian, dutch and some dialects are spoken.

Merengue is the vivid expression of dominican culture. This vibrant and seductive rhythm changes from one generation to the other along with the people's life style. Musical Instrument, TamboraDancing to the upbeat sound of guira, tambora and accordeon and drinking rum or Presidente beer is the dominican way of life. Around Independence Day (February 27th, 1844-from Haiti), another characteristic celebration takes place: The Carnival; a colorful, musical festivity in which everyone walks around dressed in typical costumes, singing, dancing and having fun.

Dominicans are very patriotic on their everyday life and pay reverence to patriotic symbols: the dominican flag, the coat of arms and the national anthem. The national motto is "God, Fatherland, Liberty".

If you love to shop, prepare to be dazzled with dominican art, cuisine, pottery, hand-made mahogany sculptures and amber or larimar jewels, which are all original expressions that summarize the mixture of rich cultures that have influenced this island throughout its history.
