THE SCHOOL SEAL

The school seal consists of a cross on a shield with a star on top surrounded by the words: Laudare, Benedicere, and Praedicare.

The entire seal is composed in sharply contrasting light and dark colors. This denotes the basic Dominican character of arriving at the truth always of separating, in sharp contrast, what is true from what is untrue; what is right from what is wrong; what is wrong from what is bad.

The cross occupies the very center of the seal. It means that the school maintains as its center Jesus Christ and His gospel. It is from this perspective that everything is viewed and adjudged as true or untrue, right or wrong, good or bad. The cross being on a shield signified that Jesus is each and every Dominican’s defense against all and every error. The foregoing represents the contemplative (contemplate) aspect of the Dominican spirit. On the other hand, the star represents the active side. It means that every Dominican has the mandate to share the fruit of his or her contemplation (contemplata alias trader) so as to illuminate the world with the truth (veritas).

The words laudare, benedicere, and praedicare simply reiterate the Dominican’s modus vivendi of soaking oneself with the Spirit of God (laudare) and letting this permeate all his or her works (benedicere) and his or her words and witness (praedicare).
