St
Mary's Cathedral Choir
St Mary's Cathedral Choir, under the direction
of Elizabeth Swain, is Australia's oldest musical
institution and dates its origins from a choir
founded in 1818. Apart from singing a wide range
of accompanied music, the choir (80 men and boys)
is renowned for its performances of unaccompanied
music.
The choir sings every Sunday (except January)
at the 10:30am high mass. On a world tour in 1991
they gained acclaim wherever they performed
particularly for their musicality and tonal
colour.
The trebles consist of schoolboys on
scholarship in years 5 to 8. The dedicated adult
men volunteer their time for for rehearsals and
mass on Sunday.
