A name is an interesting element. According to old legends of magic, a name captures the true essence of a person or thing and is also the key to controlling it. The latter may not be true, but a name might describe or help to shape someone's character. My Korean name is Youngshim Hwang, and it means something like "commanding heart" or "commanding from the heart"; although I do not think that all my decisions currently come straight from the heart, I think that I should make an effort to live up to my name.
"Youngshim" also happens to be a famous Korean cartoon character, so nearly every Korean person I meet recognizes my name. I wonder how I ended up with such a name, because some also comment that my name matches my appearance perfectly, too. Since I did not grow up under the influence of Korean TV, however, I cannot definitely agree or disagree with that statement. One good thing about my name is that because of its fame, no one has any trouble remembering it.
On the other hand, my English name "Cathy" is so common that there are usually many different Cathys and Catherines at one school; I liked the sound of it when I was younger, but as I grew older I desired something more unique, to reflect my (hopefully) distinct personality. After all, a name is something you hear every day, something that is associated with everything about you. I hope that I can become a Cathy the world has never seen the likes of before, as well as fulfill the true meaning of Youngshim.
