Internet Field Trips
My Kindergartner's love being learning about new places and being exposed to new ideas. I found the internet to be the perfect vehicle for this.
Our school is equipped with one computer that is internet-capable. This past year I decided to take advantage of this resource. So, in January, when we began studying Antarctica, I took my students down to the lab to begin a new adventure and see the "sites" (smile). Needless to say, we were "hooked". During subsequent units, we found many wonderful places to visit. Here are a few stops we found along the way...
If this is your first "adventure" with your students, here are a few tips to help you on your way. Make sure there is enough room for your students to crowd around your computer. If possible, break the students up into small groups so that they may all see a little better. As you already know, loading time is sometimes slow and boring. Have a few songs up your sleeve to sing along while you wait (or "whistle while you work" -- ha-ha!). This is an excellent opportunity to explain what the computer is doing (my students were very interested in the meaning of the hourglass, the "addresses" up top, etc.). Please check out the sites beforehand so that you know what they contain and can quickly find the information you are looking for.
And most of all: Have Fun!
