For me, art is about finding beauty
in the places we are least likely to look. The mundane, the forbidden, the
frightening, things we would rather just ignore, can be transformed into things
of beauty that we cannot turn away from. I have often found myself staring
in wonder at art that pulls me in two directions at once, like a pile of severed
arms painted by Delacroix, a woodcut of a samurai disemboweling himself by
Kuniyoshi, or a Soviet propaganda poster by El Lissitsky. These artists can
speak to us by making that truth, however ugly, wondrous to behold. I hope
that when I speak my truths you will find them beautiful.
