For six months now, President Bush has been articulating one rationale after another for the US military to attack Iraq. First it was "weapons of mass destruction" that Iraq allegedly accumulated.

Once people started to ask for evidence, the new rationale was that Hussein himself was a threat to world peace, and needed to be eliminated.

The next rationale was that Hussein had ties to al-Qaida.

Once again the problem of evidence arose, so yet another rationale was found: Hussein is threatening to his own people, so the regime must be changed.

Then it was failure to comply with UN resolutions about weapons.
Then it was failure to report on weapons.
Then it was failure to cooperate with UN weapons inspectors.
The latest is that attacking Iraq will improve chances for lasting peace in Israel and Palestine. Clearly, the administration is scraping the bottom of the barrel.
