Family of Mark and Catherine Dobbyn( nee Lynch) of Moone, Co Kildare, Ireland
(Great Grandparents of Matthew Dobbyn of Tokoroa, New Zealand)

The Following is written by Tom Dobbyn, uncle of Matthew Dobbyn of Tokoroa New Zealand.

Kate Dobbyn Born 1845. Died 21 July 1930 aged 85 years. She left Kildare when still young and settled in New York. About 1870 she married Mr Mannix. Her daughter Anna L. was born in 1872 and 55 years later was still a spinster. Her other daughter Katie married James Keegan and by 1927 they had 2 girls and 2 boys. The Mannix home address in 1927 was 461D1 144th Street N.Y.

John Dobbyn Went to New York from Kildare where he married. I never heard his wife's name. they had 3 sons - John, a draughtsman; Mark, a secretary and another son (I haven't a name), who was an electrician. They also had 2 daughters - Grace, who had a degree as master of music and Ruth. John Senior and Grace were crippled in a railway accident. I believe John Senior lost both legs. The family home was at 16 Roff Street, Stapleton, Staten Island New York in 1927. After the death of their parents, Grace and Ruth lived at 998 Vanderbilt Avenue, Staten Island, New York, where Grace gave music tuition.

Margaret Dobbyn Went to New York from Kildare when young. Later married (I do not know her married name for sure but it may have been O'Shaughnessy). A daughter, Mary, went to Australia. In 1920 she was widowed and at that time had 2 sons, Michael (10 years) and Desmond (7 years) who was born on the day his father died. Mary married again in 1927 and had a daughter Margaret, and 2 sons, Mark and Joseph Gabriel. Joseph Gabriel fought in World War 1 and was twice wounded.

Cratia Dobbyn Married Dan Lynch of Cork, coal merchant. Died young in Cork with her 2 children from some virulent disease. Dan Lynch moved to Liverpool where he died at a ripe old age.

Bridget Kathleen Dobbyn (Sister Pancratius) Went to America when 13 years old and attended school in New York. She probabley made her home with her sister Kate (Mrs Mannix). She had a rare singing voice and music critics termed her the "Jenny Lind of America". At age 17 years she entered the Convent of the Holy Rosary, East Second Street, New York. From there she was sent to teach in St. Joseph's Academy, Elizabethport, New Jersey. An eye disease broke out among the children which Sister Pancratius caught and was blind for 2 years, afterwards recovering some sight and carried on teaching singing, violin and embroidery. Her Golden Jubilee was Celebrated in June 1929. She was born on 1 February 1862 and died 5 April 1930 aged 68 years. More Information

Sarah Dobbyn Married Mr Donlon. Lived at 22 Congress Terrace, Longford, Ireland. Died 25th May 1945.

Maria Dobbyn Went to New York from Kildare. Married a German named Van Hagenson. After a year of marriage she discovered Van Hagenson had a wife in Germany, so she left him. For some reason she continued to use his name. For a number of years she was matron of the Home State Custodial, Staten Island New York. After her retirement she spent about a year with her brother Mark and family in Liverpool and then went to Ireland where her address was Ballytore Post Office, Ballytore, Co Kildare. She died in November 1927. I do not know her age but she was old

Mark Dobbyn (Grandfather of Matthew Dobbyn of Tokoroa, New Zealand) Born 11 August 1860. Died 10 March 1943. On 16 February 1898 married Catherine Ryan (1873 - 1950), daughter of John and Mary Ryan of Kilnacask, Bansha, Co. Tipperary (now Golden, not Bansha). After marriage lived in James Street, Tipperary Town, where daughter Catherine was born (1899 - 1924) and son John (Jack) (1900 - 1980)(Father of Matthew Dobbyn of Tokoroa New Zealand). Moved to Liverpool where daughter Mary (May) (1903 - 1974) , Thomas Patrick (Tom) (26 July 1907) and Elizabeth(Bessy) (30 October 1915) were born.

The foregoing is all the information I have about the children of Mark and Catherine Dobbyn of Moone Co Kildare. Most of it was obtained from letters written by Sister Pancratius to my father. From the same source came the following items:-

Herbert Dobbyn A cousin of some degree but I cannot discover his forebears. At a guess I would say he was a grandson of Uncle John of Staten Island. In 1933 he lived at 570 Vanderbilt Avenue, Concord, New York. His daughter Marion Dobbyn married Mr Jared O'Neil in October 1933 and went to live at 584 Villa Avenue, Graniteville. Marion Dobbyn had a cousin Edward Dobbyn living in Concord at that time.
