Link and Banner Exchanges
Most webs surfers go from one site to another using links. If you like a website related to the subject of one your page, you can then write to the owners of the website and ask them permission to put a link to their website (or tell them that you did), give them the address where they can see it and if it is appropriate, you can tell them that they can put a link to yours if they want.
For more info on building links, see:
Linking 101
You can also exchange banners with other sites. But as a whole, visitors have learned to ignore banners, so it is not as effective as links. There are programs that will put banners on your site and display yours on other sites.

Traffic Programs
These are programs that will help you draw traffic to your site. You can put ads advertising a particular page of your website or one of your merchant's websites.
I like these three where you have to look at a certain number of websites to join and then you just have to promote them and the traffic to your website multiplies as your ad gets to the last position.

There are many programs that will require you to surf through other people's websites to get hits to yours. It takes time, but you can discover interesting websites doing that and other website owners seeing your site may place a link to it on their site.
It is best to surf to use many different programs as there may be different people in each who will be able to see your site. You can get more credits more rapidly by using Crazy Browser that enables to surf many programs at the same time.
There are autosurf programs, but that usually means that people will just let it run and not look at your website. Many programs give you extra credits if you set their page as your start page. Programs that offer the possibility to earn credits through referring people enable you to multiply your credits.
Different programs have different ratios. A 2:1 program means you get 1 visit to your site for every 2 sites you view. So 1:1 programs are more advantageous.
You can use these programs to promote one of your affiliate merchants' websites, but that will mostly give exposure to the program. A few people may stop surfing to join that program from your site but most people won't and if they join, it will be through somebody else afterwards.
If you have a personal website, it would be a good thing to remove your images and banner from the page so it loads more quickly. Also, since most traffic programs do not show the address of the websites they show, you can add your site's address on the page and add a script enabling people to bookmark your site. You can find one at Cgi-scripts. There is a mistake on their page. You must put the text of Step 1 in the body right before the text of Step 2 as I did on my page for surfers. You also have to customize your site's address in Step 1 and the location and look of your link in Step 2.
My preferences in traffic exchanges go to the ones that have a 1:1 ratio, with a short timer, the possibility to enter many URLs and different weights for each, the possibility to bookmark the sites we view or to open them in a new window to bookmark them, 3 levels of more for referrals and though that is less important, I prefer to click on "Next" than on different numbers, colors or words. The ones mentioned here have many of them and they all have 3 levels or more.
Here are 1:1 traffic exchanges:
Get My Traffic (15 sec, bookmark sites, multiple URLs, click on Next Site)
Traffic Run (0-20 sec, bookmark sites, only one URL, click on Next Site, unfortunately it's 1:1 for free members for a limited time only)
4FreeHits (15 sec, bookmark sites, but only one URL))
Buyers-Heaven (15 sec, open sites with no frame, but only one URL)
Sluggy's exchange (15 sec, multiple URLs, click on Next)
800Hits TrafficX (15 sec, multiple URLs, click on Next)
Ask Miky (15 sec, multiple URLs with different weights)
Startxchange (15 sec, multiple URLs, click on Next page)
AK-Family (1:1 plus bonus credits, 25 sec, you can open sites with no frame, multiple URLs, click on the text, you can also get from them a site rotator to use at other exchanges allowing only one URL)
I Love Clicks (30 sec, multiple URLs, can assign credits to the URL, can open websites with no frame)
Traffic G (30 sec, multiple URLs, has the address of the websites, very popular)
Web Master Quest (30 secs, can see the site's address if you click on Stats, many URLs with different weights, very popular)
These are all similar, they have changed their interface, it is much better, they have multiple URLs: Hot Rod Hits (12 sec), Homebiz Clickers (15 sec), Traffic Party (15 sec), EPower Traffic (15 sec), Clicking City (20 sec), Bright Star Traffic (20 sec), Golden Palace of Traffic (20 sec), Crimson Network (30 sec), USA Superclicks (30 sec), Your Biz Traffic (15, 35 or 45 sec).
Here are 2:1 programs (you have to view 2 sites to get one view to your site) rather popular so it may be a good thing to use them once in a while:
Hitsnapper (10 sec, very fast, can open sites in new window)
Fast Freeway (15 sec, rather fast)
1Heluva (20 sec, very popular)
These two are a little different. It lets you choose the sites you want to look at and it makes you get targeted traffic since people choose your ad. It makes for slower surfing though. With Traffic Swarm, you can get extra credits for one site and you get credits if you put a pop-under on your page.

Search Engines
Search engines.can dra traffic to your website, but you have to compete against thousands of other sites. You can make a place for yourself there by writing a lot of related keywords in your meta tag separated by a space, a coma and a space. You can find the words people search for most often with Word Tracker.
You can surprisingly get a good ranking with a certain combination of words that people search for and that you happen to have on your page in different sentences. That's what happened to me. I had submitted my site only to Geocities' directory. That got me listed in Google and Altavista and for a certain combination of words, I was on the first page in Altavista.
Search engines take into into account your popularity to rate your site. So getting links from other websites will improve considerably your ranking in the search engines.
You can submit to each search engine separately, but that can be a rather tenuous job. You can do it using the Tooter at Self-Promotion (see below) You can also use services that will do it for you for a fee. Some of them guarantee you a certain ranking, they are of course more expensive.
