How the West Papuan make the bark bags - Process  No. 1

I asked, "How did you make those bags and hats?

 

Ms. Ani answered: (the photos below were taken from the photo album belongs to the Pondok Marturia)

First we went to the jungle to cut the trees that would be used as the raw materials.

It was kayu semang (outrigger wood). Its age was two when we cut it. It is a soft wood and it can grow fast.

Then we cut it in to shorter parts. After that we peeled them to separate the bark from the trunk.

     

We brought them home and soak them in the water for one night to clean the barks from their sap.

The next day, we pounded them. We used wooden stick.

Now it was the time to brush them so that the dirts would be cleared away.
