| September 4-5, Climb of Colorado 14'er Blanca Peak | |||||||
| Our plan was to meet part way up Blanca Peak, at Como Lake, were we would camp and make an early start for the 14,435' summit the following morning. Access to the mountain is via a 4 wheel drive trail up to Como Lake at about 10,500'. I was to meet up with a group at the lake, friends of a mutual friend, Greg Mann, who couldn't make this trip. The group was John and Eric Shoemaker, Scott Brosi and Dave Shiring. The group flew in the day before and spent the night near the mountain to get an early start which was a good thing considering they had to hike most of the road up to the lake. The trail starts steep but smooth, but soon got steep, loose and rough. I drove down from Denver and got to the start of the trail at noon. Under threatening skies and doubting looks at my nearly stock Rangie from a group of wheelers in fully built trail buggies, I aired down. |

| I was already breaking all the cardinal rules of wheeling: driving on my own, on an unknown road and no winch. To make things worse, the skies were threatening rain. I kept my fingers crossed against the rain all the way up. | |||||||
