DNA is the genetic code to life of all species.  DNA is Deoxyribonucleic Acid. In 1869 Friedrich Miescher isolated the first nuclein from its cell nuclei. Nuclein is a highly impure form of DNA.  Nucleic acid which makes up part of DNA is from the nuclein. Nucleic acid is composed of phosphoric acid, a sugar and, a nucleotide (variety of nitrogen containing bases).

Phoebus Levene made it clear that there are two types of nucleic acid. They are 1- sugar ribose and 2- deoxyribose. Today the nucleic acid, which is made up of sugar ribose, is called RNA. Also deoxyribose is called DNA. Oswald T. Avery demonstrated that the DNA molecule is a carrier of genetic information. Linus Pauling visited the University of Oxford in 1948. This is were he discovered the basic structure of proteins. It was The Alpha Helix.  This 3-D structure is based on holding the amino acids together. Linus called it "The Peptide Bond".

Linus Pauling worked out a 3-strand structure that was composed of bulky bases. Linus did not believe it was a 3-strand structure. Past lectures and paper concurred with Pauling's thoughts. In his thoughts and others it showed it could be a double helix. But by laboratory  manipulations they were forced to conclude it was a triple helix. Peter Pauling (Linus Pauling's son) meet James Watson and Francis Crick and told them about his fathers work. Over the next year they that our DNA is a double helix. In march 1953 Watson and Crick constructed a detailed model of there Double Helix.
