| English is written from left to right and from top to bottom. Other languages are written differently. Cherokee is written from right to left and from top to bottom. Chinese is written from top to bottom and from left to right. The three paragraphs shown in this example can be read in any order and still make good sense. The new term for this example is modular and/or stand-alone. This is obviously linear/book format but there is greater diversity than the average linear/book format. This is a common characteristic of Web Design which allows users to scroll randomly. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The first obstacle is learning to control own body followed closely by learning to communicate with other people. Scientists are still struggling to understand language development. If everything goes well, they will lead happy lives untroubled by any evil spirits. They must watch for these evil spirits everywhere. These primitive people are taught to constantly be vigilant, always scanning their eyes around them. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Civilized people have detailed rules about numbering and labeling all kinds of objects. Some of these rules seem silly to people from other civilizations. The strangest rules of all concern computers and Internet usage. Most people use the skills they learned in books to help them make sense of the NEW technology. Most of the time that approach is acceptable, but there are some surprises. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Primitive people normally have some words which correspond to numbers. Usually, they use their fingers and toes for counting but occasionally they will use other objects. They usually create arts and crafts which may include numbers or abstract symbols. However, they do not normally have strict rules about how you should use these numbers and symbols. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
