| How long does it take to learn something meaningful? Different people need different lengths of time to learn different subjects. All too frequently, people decide that something is not worth the effort required. For Example: There are no jobs for people who play the guitar like Elvis Presley so it is hard to justify the time and money to buy and practice the guitar. |
| What are you trying to accomplish? (If YOU don't know than YOU are quaranteed not to accomplish anything.) |
| Who can you ask for help? (The library staff can only help some so YOU need to find the right book.) |
| Keep three things in mind when looking for the right book. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Is it better to check out a book or buy a book? It depends on how long you need a particular book. If you are not sure which book you need then it is safer to check out the book(s) first. |

| Is it better to take a class or get a book? It depends on your level of expertise. If you know so little about a subject that you don't know where to start then it's better to take a class. If you know quite a lot then it's better to get a book. For Example: If you don't know the difference between a slotted screw and a phillips screw then you need someone to show you how to use the different types of screwdrivers. If you are an experienced construction worker then you will be bored with explanations of screwdrivers. |

| Isn't the Internet supposed to eliminate all those paper copy books? Some people are predicting that everything will eventually become paperless. They tend to be the same kind of people that predicted computer doom on January 1, 2000. Maybe we will and maybe we won't go paperless. In either case, there will still be libraries with plenty of paper books since books fulfill a different function then the Internet. Click here for additional information. |

| Are there books which show how to make Web pages like this Web page? There are so many books on that subject that it is hard to know where to start. There are five basic approaches. First, you can check-out or buy a book which is very time consuming (unless you have data processing experience) and does not guarantee success. Second, you can take a class which is fairly time consuming and expansive and may not produce the desired results. Third, you can hire a systems analyst from a temporary service which is fairly expansive but does guarantee results. Fourth, you can ask a friend for help which might destroy your friendship due to differences of opinions. Fifth, you can go to the Internet and search for Web sites that outline Web design which has all of the advantages and disadvantages of all the previously mentioned options. Ask yourself this question. "What do I want to say in a Web page and how much resources am I willing to commit to this project?" Click here for additional information. |

| Is it better to get a book from a series? It depends on your personal preference. The series are more predictable but the one-of-a-kind are more common. You have to skim the one-of-a kind to see if the information is suited to your needs. For Example: How The Internet Works by Preston Gralla is outstanding but would overwhelm the average reader since it is highly professional. |
| What are the pros and cons of the different series of books available? They cater to different levels and age groups. The following are JUST opinions. Send Email if one of your favorite series is not mentioned. |

| Why are there no series books listed for professionals over 50? Professionals don't use them especially over 50 because they might know more than the authors. For Example: Professional chefs normally do not read the Complete Idiots Guide to anything in the kitchen but they might read the Complete Idiots Guide to Getting a Good Night's Sleep. |
