Experiment in Packing oranges for export.

Mr. G.S.Fowler having a long time taken a lively interest in the export of South Australian fruits, has lately made an interesting experiment with oranges grown at Wooton Lea, Glen Osmond. On June 14 and 15 last about 3000 oranges of the best kinds were gathered for export, the head gardiner Mr. John Binnie taking care that the fruit should not be pulled off the branches, but that the stems should be cut about quarter of an inch from the peel. After they had been piled up for a few days each orange was wrapped in fine paper, and the whole were on June 20 packed in corkdust in thirty wooden cases. These made a shipment to England, and Mr.Fowler who is on a trip to the old country, has written out to say that the fruit arrrived in splendid condition, beautifully ripe, with not a bad one amongst them. The gardiner on June 20 also filled six similar cases to be kept at Wooton Lea, the oranges being treated in a similar way except that ordinary wood sawdust was used in the packing. Four of these cases were opened a month age, and the fruit turned out very well. On saturday October 20 , a Registor representative saw another case opened, the oranges having then been in sawdust just four months. The oranges on being taken out and sampled were found to be in splendid condition being sweet and full of juice, with no mark of fungus or sign of decay. Mr. Binnie says the advantage of corkdust over wooddust is that it will prevent the spread of fungus, should any of the fruit develop it, while wooddust will allow it to spread without hinderance.
