Well,
according to our gran-father, who was always quite close lipped
about family antecedents
(what were they hiding?) the Potts family actually originated
in Wales. That's pretty close to the truth I think. There is
a prominant family
of Pottses here in Washington, who swear that the geneological
records say that the name Potts originated in Western England,
either in Dorset or
in Southeastern Wales. that makes sense, since the Western English
in the 16th Century were evangelical
Christians of the Puritanical stripe and made up the basis of
Cromwell's army during the civil war against King Charles and
later
in the conquest and occupation of Ireland.

A
member of Cromwell's Army named Potts returned to Ireland and
married an Irish lass in Wexford on the
Southeastern coast.

Great-grandfather
Potts who lived in Ware, Massachusetts owned and operated one
of the three taverns
in that town. I'd like to think that it was
called Potts Pub but I'm not sure of that.
Great-grandfather was quite a character and
ran his establishment with an iron hand. Under
town law a bar had to dispense food as well as
drinks but since maintaining a kitchen was required,
and a nuisance most tavern owners ignored the to
cover himself Grandfather kept a single can of baked
beans behind the bar.
One night a stranger to the town demanded food with his drink.
After a period of argument the guy kept insisting so
grandfather pulled out the can of beans, chopped the top off
with an axe he kept under the bar in case of riot
and spilled the beans in front of the
customer and said, "There you go, now stop complaining!
My grandfather was a very skilled accountant.
He was however, a
very conservative New Englander who was never sure the horse
and carriage was gone forever. He never owned-or drove- an automobile.
The first car in our family is one Uncle Bob bought
when he came home from the Army after World War II
had ended. I proudly gave grandad a ride but he was not comfortable.
As I drove down the main drag of our town in Long Island he
kept
warning me, " Now
Bob, you don't have to pass them all!"
