Of the many "gunfighters" I have studied, three stand out as particularly interesting to me. Those are, John Wesley Hardin, Ben Thompson, and my internet namesake, Clay Allison. They all have in common that they are only moderately well known. Also that they were "unreconstructed" Confederates. |

Clay Allison was born in Tennessee in 1840, he suffered a blow to the head at the age of 18 which caused him when under physical or emotional stress (or drunk) to fly into maniacal rages. He died in 1887 of injuries suffered when he fell off a buckboard and the wheel rolled over his neck. |

Ben Thompson was called the deadliest gunfighter in the history of the Old West By Bat Masterson who could easily have a claim on that distinction as well.
Born in England, 1842. Moved with his parents to Austin, Texas at the age of 9.
After serving in the Civil War and On Maximillian's side of the Mexican revolution, Thompson settled down to the quiet life of being a Gambler and Gunfighter.
He had a personal hatred for James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickock. He never chose to test Hickock himself but tried to get John Wesley Hardin mad enough to get the job done for him.
Thompson was elected Town Marshall of Austin, Texas in 1881.
Killed 32 men in his lifetime (by his count. At least 16 were verifiable.)
Murdered in 1884 in San Antonio, Texas along with his friend John "King" Fisher. |
