Dave, I had found on the 1850 census the information about John Laughlin being born in NC about 1777 and his wife, Barbara, also born in NC about 1769. I don't know whether this will help or not but I had found a John Loflin (I found the name was often misspelled) on the 1830 TN census in Dickson Co. Dickson is right next to Williamson so it's possible it's the same one. One of my ancestors owned land in both Dickson & Williamson - he lived right on the county line. The age groups for John are as follows: 2 males under 5 1 male 5-10 1 male 15-20 - Possibly Lynden, he was born about 1810 1 male 50-60 - John 1 female under 5 1 female 5-10 1 female 15-20 - { I don't know the exact birth dates but going by the marriage dates these 4 females could be Nancy, Susan, 3 females 20-30 -{ Jane and Isabell 1 female 60-70 - Barbara What do you think of these possibilities? Since all the children were probably married by the time the 1850 census was taken there were no children listed in the household of John and Barbara. Unless there was a will there would be no way of knowing the names of their children unless some descendant had a record. Lynden is listed in the 1860 Williamson Co. Census although his name is terribly misspelled. It gives his family as follows: Loftin, London Age 50 Caroline Age 41 Mary Ann E. Age 19 (I can't figure this out unless the census taker gave their ages incorrectly) Louisa C. Age 19 Emily C. Age 19 John L. Age 15 (He was the one that married Mary E. Harrison in 1869 in Williamson Co.) Laughter, William A. Age 10 (The last name was obviously another mistake by the census taker & his first name was actually Williamson, after his grandfather) Tennessee C. Age 8 Virginia B. Age 5 Nall, Rebecca Age 46 (She was Caroline's sister and had previously lived with another sister - she never married) In the book "Nall Families of America" it gives the children of Lynden and Caroline as Thomas R. b. 1837; Mary Ann E., b. 1839; Louisa C., b. 1840; Emily C., b. 1842; John L., b. 1845; and Williamson, b. 1850. I suppose Thomas R. was married by the 1860 census since he wasn't listed in the household mentioned above. I don't know why it doesn't list the names of Tennessee C. and Virginia B. unless when they saw the name Laughter they thought that was their last name. I guess I've given you enough information to think about. Maybe we will finally get this family figured out. Unfortunately I don't have a good library (that has a lot of genealogy) near me so I depend mostly on what I can find on the Internet. The only problem with that is that sometimes I am the only one looking for a certain ancestor. I found another tidbit about Lynden that I found in the book "Miscellaneous Records - Williamson County, TN, Vol 4" Compiled and published by Louise Gillespie Lynch, 1981 (I met this lady when my husband and I went to Williamson Co. several years ago and she was a tremendous help). This notation is from Loose Records in Archives. July 27, 1882 - Coroner's report - Inquest held over the body of Lynden Laughlin...that he died whilst out on his farm and along and so far as they are able to judge...believe of heart disease. Since it seems he is your ancestor thought you would be interested in that. Ann Wallace
