| Four-Step Approach - Part 1 | ||||||||||||||||
| The four-step approach consists of walking toward the foul line at the same time the ball is swinging. While all the steps are presented separately, the goal is to have a smooth, fluid motion. This will take time and practice; some irregular motions are to be expected while learning the approach. To begin, the bowler is positioned 4 steps from the foul line. As described above, the half step is added to simulate the end position of the traditional four-step approach. Step 1: The first step - as shown below - is the most important one in the approach as it sets timing, direction and balance necessary for the remaining steps. The ball and the ball-side foot move out together. This step needs to be the shortest one. All the remaining steps will build in length and momentum, so keep the first step short. The ball is pushed out during the step about waist high and toward the target. The elbow will unhinge somewhat until the arm is out about 65 percent with the elbow still slightly bent. |

| Step 2: During the second step, the non-ball side foot moves forward as the ball arcs down, as shown below. The opposite hand that was helping support the weight of the ball moves away. At the end of the second step, the ball should be beside the body at, or slightly behind, the ball-side leg. | ||||||||||||||||
