Debbie L. Leighton began her career with the Auburn School District while still in high school. Succeeding in this capacity, she was offered full-time employment upon graduation from high school, which she accepted. This prospect provided Ms. Leighton with many opportunities to learn different positions throughout the human resource and superintendent offices, eventually rising to an administrative level.

Ms. Leighton currently serves as the district's Coordinator of Human Resources, supervising six positions and overseeing completion of critical state reports which provide significant funding to the district, budgeting, hiring process of all staff, fingerprinting, certification of staff members, employment contracts, harassment investigations, negotiations, etc. Opportunities abound in allowing Ms. Leighton to work with staff to overcome issues before they become grievances by holding monthly conference committee meetings with bargaining groups. Currently, Ms. Leighton is working with the district to assure that classified employees meet compliance requirements for the No Child Left Behind Act.

Always wishing to keep busy, Ms. Leighton is beginning a second three-year term on the board of directors for the Auburn Downtown Association. This Association promotes activities throughout the Auburn downtown area to encourage shoppers to visit the area. Additionally, Ms. Leighton serves on the board of the Washington School Personnel Association as a region representative for her area. In this capacity, Ms. Leighton also served as a co-chair for a recent WSPA Spring Conference.

Ms. Leighton graduated, with honors, from Green River Community College with an Associate of Arts Degree. She is currently a senior in the Human Services program through Western Washington University, Woodring College of Education.
