Natalie in movies....
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Character: Queen Amidala/Padm Naberrie
"Well, it is basically a love story, but with more action than the previous film. My character is a senator and people are trying to assassinate her. She has two Jedi assigned to protect her: Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker, the little boy that she knew before. They start travelling together and they fall in love. She has this big conflict of being serious in her career - her role as a senator. Also, the Jedi are not allowed to be in love. It's something to do with keeping the Force with them. So, there's a lot of emotional conflict as well as the usual battles."
Where the Heart Is (2000)
Character: Novalee Nation, an abandoned pregnant teenager
"I saw it as a Wizard of Oz-like story about a young girl on a journey. Along the way, she meets these crazy characters who become her family. It's not a movie about young girls getting hurt by boys. It's not a warning. It's more about the power of being a good person, and I like how sincere it is in that belief. Being a well-intentioned, good human being can lead you to a place where you can be happy, and build your own family, even if you were not blessed with that when you were born."
Anywhere But Here (1999)
Character: Ann August, the daughter in a volatile mother-daughter relationship
"Susan Sarandon plays this kind of crazy, irresponsible mother and her daughter is kind of forced to be the adult because her mother is not taking the responsibility that she needs to."
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Character: Queen Amidala/Padm Naberrie, ruler of Naboo and future mother of Luke Skywalker
and Princess Leia
"I think it's really interesting to have someone so young as a leader because there is such a purity of intention in a young person. It's not corrupted by power yet or any of those adult emotions of greed and control and things like that. She's just very idealistic and concerned for her people. She doesn't want to go to war. She wants to save her people. She doesn't want to hurt anything. It's naive in a way, but it's kind of beautiful at the same time to see someone who's so good and really just a kind person and wants to keep that in the face of this threat. But at the same time, that same innocence allows her to be taken advantage of a little bit and I think her whole persona of this mask with the whole costume and the makeup... it's like a guard that she puts up against herself so people think that she's really strong. She's 14 and she's responsible for all these people and they're in danger of being hurt. I really thought she was a great character because she's just so smart and in the end she gets it all together and she really keeps herself composed."
Mars Attacks! (1996)
Character: Taffy Dale, daughter of the President of USA
"I play the President's daughter. She becomes dark and rebellious. I don't think this girl's like Chelsea."
Everyone Says I Love You (1996)
Character: Laura
"It's an old fashioned musical where people burst into song as they walk down the street. I had a good time. It was my first time working with other kids like Lukas Haas and Drew Barrymore. Julia Roberts, Alan Alda and Goldie Hawn are in it too."
Beautiful Girls (1996)
Character: Marty , a 13-year old girl next door who steals the heart of a man.
"It's about these guys who have this fantasy of finding supermodels as girlfriends. They're sure that one day these models are going to come and sweep them off their feet, and they're not really giving the regular girls a chance. Their girlfriends are real women and don't fulfill that plastic image. Which is not to say models are the problem but their image is."
Developing (1995)
Character: Nina, in a short movie about breast cancer
Heat (1995)
Character: Lauren, a dysfunctional teenager
Lon/ The Professional (1994)
Character: Mathilda, an orphan who befriends a hitman
"It's also about two people who by themselves are so unhappy, but when they're together they're very, very happy just because they have each other's companionship. They're taking care of each other. They're nurturing each other. Because love can be plutonic, right?"
