Brewster Gardens, Plymouth Mass. Memorial stone erected for William Brewster on Burial Hill Brewster House at Plymouth Plantation

William Brewster
(1566/67-1644)

"It is not with us as with men whom smalle things can discourage or smalle discontentments cause to wish themselves home again."

Although the Elder William Brewster is certainly considered the much beloved patriarch of the Pilgrims, I like to think of him as the troublemaker, for while in Leyden he became a fugitive from King James I of England because he published a number of religious pamphlets critical of the King and opposed to the tenets of the Church of England. In 1616, William and some others started an underground printing company, to distribute books and pamphlets encouraging their religious belief. This company was originally called the "Vicus Chorali", and was later known as the Pilgrim Press. They also printed non-controversial literature as a cover for their real purpose. The religious literature was smuggled into England, and consequently landed William in trouble. Upon discovery of the connection between him and the literature, the authorities attempted to find and arrest him. Even though he did such from another country, Holland, such acts were considered treasonous and subject to execution.
