The statue of William Bradford below Cole's Hill was commissioned in 1921 as part of Plymouth's 1921 tercentenary celebration honoring the longstanding Governor of Plymouth Colony. The Monument to him is located in Burial Hill overlooking the harbor.
Replacing the deceased John Carver in 1621, William became the second governor of Plymouth Colony, and successfully led his foundling community through difficult times. He enacted peace treaties with neighboring Wampanoag tribe chief Massasoit which led to harmonious relations for many years. He was instrumental in bringing forth the first democratic document in America, the Mayflower Compact, which set the groundwork for the foundation of our democratic beliefs held today. He helped to provide future generations a glimpse into Pilgrim life by writing Of Plymouth Plantation and Mourt's Relation.
