What is Next ?
According to preliminary discussions with Dr. Hedden fine
tuning of her hip is the next step in resolving her seating problem. We won’t
get into that discussion just yet except that we have previously tried a Botox
injection in the left abductor muscle. That had a short term wonderful affect
allowing much greater range of motion but at a cost of $700.00 This worked for
about 10 weeks before it quickly wore off due in part to the size of Katie and
the size of the muscle injected. This apparently is a very safe procedure as
botox is injected into an isolated muscle with no affect on any other parts of
the body.
Looking Back after 8
months:
When you see Katie sitting upright whether in her wheel
chair, on the edge of her bed, you see a noticeable difference. That alone makes
the operation worth it. The most overwhelming reason we consider the
operation to have benefited Katie's quality of life is the comfort that it has
brought. Katie can now sit for extended periods (all day at school), or
lay in her bed without requiring numerous position changes. This has made
taking care of Katie a little easier and certainly more rewarding.
