Outdoor Venues

Red Rocks Ampitheater
There is no greater outdoor venue in the United States as far as I am concerned. Each summer since 1996, I have either driven or flown there to see either Phish or Widespread Panic. Since Phish no longer plays there, it is up to WSP to keep me going back. Running into old friends near and far is easy to do at this amazing "natural" ampitheater set in the foothills of the lower Rockies just south of Boulder. If you like music just a little, I suggest going out there for any concert of your choosing. If religion is your thing, then go out there for the Easter Sunday Mass held there each year. Apparently an awe-inspiring service is held, and let me tell you, the view can do that on its own.

Deer Creek Pavilion
One of many Phish-venues to be listed here. This "shed" in the middle of corn fields is just that. Camping just a few minutes walk away, whether on surrounding neighbors lawns or on the Deer Creek property, you can't go wrong. The only problem I have ever had here is the insufferable heat during the middle of the summer. That, and getting lost in the corn fields.

Garden State Arts Center
Some people hate this venue. The only thing I don't like about it is its new name - The PNC Bank Arts Center. Ugh. Corporate America taking over once again. As for shows, I've seen a bunch here: James Taylor two times, Steely Dan, Jethro Tull, The Allmans Brothers, Phish a bunch of times and the H.O.R.D.E festival

Lakewood Ampiteater
This Atlanta venue is in the middle of a real shanty part of town. However, once you are in the gates, its another world. The open air courtyard does nothing for you when it rains, and when its hot, forget about it, no shade. Otherwise the sound is pretty good here and despite regulations for close proximity to the airport, fireworks display on the 4th of July were still fun.

Great Woods Ampitheater
Another great place that lost its name to big business. Now the Tweeter Center, this venue was great for summer gigs. Ample shade for long hot days. Only problem are the Massachussetts drinking laws that are strict on beer consumption. The security could be a little more lax too. I was denied entrance because I had a bag of carrots with me. They ended up throwing them out without even giving me the chance to bring them to the car. Lame.

Sugarbush Summerstage
I saw the only 3 shows played here by Phish and let me tell you, wow, what a great time. The stage fit right at the bottom of a ski trail and the views were amazing. Camping nearby but a terrible bus situation were other memorables. A great time, especially if you were low on cash to get a ticket. Easy to just get in.
