Thoughts on The Genres
Dance Electronica
(Trance, Progressive, House, Breaks) is more fun to spin in my humble
opinion. The energy is there, and it's just a steady source
of emotions. The music tends to rely on matching the 2nd/4th
hat or the bass beat as well as phrase matching.
Hip hop / R&B on the other hand rely on snares mostly, and there's
almost unlimited ways on how you can match the songs. Keeping
'em flow is another story. I'm more into the old school
hip hop, not the new modern Ja Rule-type shit that plagues radio
airwaves. But in order to please the crowd, you have to play some/many
mainstream crap, and that irks me. I'd be perfectly happy
spinning old school beats all day long, but the crowd normally
wants the new stuff. The audience also ain't always with
you. I feel there's less energy in the music itself.
Some people may disagree, but how often have you looked at some
guy dancing alone on the hip hop floor?
Electronica on the other hand is a different story. People
don't care what you do. Most face the DJ because he is the
leader in charge of the movement. Because of this, you control what the crowd feels more so
than the hip hop DJ who must constantly pull out radio choons to make the crowd recognize a song.
There are alot of emotions
involved in creating a particular piece. Use your imagination. Check out some of the
DJs in my Links section, and as you listen, you'll learn the complexity
of the music that most don't possess the knowledge to appreciate. I warn you... once you feel the vibe, it will be
with you forever.
