Conversion to the AS5046 Airfoil
updated January 11, 2004
After careful consideration, I decided that the new AS5046 airfoil was what I wanted to put on my KR.  The biggest concern I had was how I was going to remove the aft spar, which had already been mounted, in order to raise in line with the angle of incidence associated with this airfoil.  Well, after some discussion with Les Criscillo, who provided some tips he got from other builders, I got up the nerve to take a saw to my KR.  Here is what it looked like before.
First, I drilled a 3/8" hole in the top rear corner in which to start my cut.  I picked up this had saw that uses reciprocating saw blades at Lowes for $5.  I proceeded to cut the rear vertical side since it was where the spacing spruce blocks were on the inside which can be replaced.  As you can see, I am cutting through the 5/8" spruce gussets on the outside.  On the other side, I chiseled these off first, which made it a lot easier..
Next, I cut the horizontal cut across the top.  After these two cuts were done, I used a sharpened putty knife to carefully chisiel off the forward gusset and then tapping it in between the spar and the fuselage on the forward and bottom sides, being carefull not to damange the spar or the vertical fuselage member.  I also had to use the putty knife to separate the spar from the bottom fuselage cross member.
Finally, we have separation!!  As you can see, some of the wood from the filler blocks around the spar need to be cleaned off.  The next picture shows what it looked like once, I sanded the residual wood and epoxy off of the spar.  It's a nice clean contact for when the spar is remounted.  The initial cleaning is done around the hole in the fuselage, however, some more cleaning on the outside and inside still remains.
Now, it's on to cutting the new rib templates, laminating the 1/8" strip to the top of each spar and reposition the aft spar based on the new airfoil....
