This was the first derby participated in by DDCB members.  Click Here to read the story of how it all began.....
The Cuban Caddy was a 1979 Cadillac Deville.  Andrew Mir was the owner. DJ Sullivan, Alex Moshenberg, Erik Osterberg, Karl Dobosz, John Feltes and Brad Zoller helped to prepare the car for the big day.  For specific details refer to "how to make a demolition derby car". Jose Mir (Andy's dad) did not enjoy the broken glass and various parts strewn about his driveway, however he was supportive and proud of his son's persevearence.

Broccolo automotive provided the sponsoring Tow to the event.  The car was also sponsored by Rocky Mt. Pizza.  Andy had to obtain a motorcycle helmet and wear long pants and long sleeve shirt.  When he arrived at the  fairgrounds, John F, and he entered the "PIT" area.  They were by far the least "Grizzled" people in the PIT area.

Andy demonstarted excellent rear end ramming technique on his opponents.   After being stuck against the cement wall for almost 4 minutes, the Caddy broke free and began the final showdown with the 4 cars left running.  All technique was forgotten as the Caddy used its front end to ram and cripple its remaining foes.  At the end of the heat, 2 out of 12 cars remained and the CUBAN CADDY was one of the 2.

In the Championship heat, all of the preliminary heat champions faced off.  The Caddy was at a huge disadvantage for the the simple reason it was on its 2nd wind.  Most of the other winners had fresh cars to compete with.  By all accounts the Caddy went down heroically although it was not victorious.

All expectations were exceeded.  Andy received a 28 inch trophy and 40 dollars for winning the preliminary heat.  Valuable experience was gained, which would be put to efficient use in future derby efforts.
