THE MALL (TWO ANGELS)
It was a quiet fire station,
Chief took the dogs down to the mall,
Where they tested all his patience,
And redefined the word appalled.
He’d planned to get their photo
At Pete’s Portraits Just For Pets,
Then add it to our station’s logo,
For all our trucks and firehouse crest.
As they waited in the lobby,
Those dogs began to fight,
For Max had wanted color copies,
But Gus chose black and white.
“Mr. Edwards, I’m afraid I couldn’t get their picture,
Because those dogs would not sit still.
In fact, they even broke a fixture,
And for that, I’ll have to bill.”
Then they snuck off from Chief without asking,
And roamed by themselves through the Mobile Bay Mall.
And discovered a Christmas-time pageant,
This Child from Heaven was Born for Us All.
“Although it’s a rip that those people got taxed,
You’ve just gotta love that name Caesar Augustus!”
And as Gus kept blabbing and babbling with Max,
The wise men yelled, “Boys! Quit talking and don’t interrupt us!”
Then they were tossed out from the Cookie Cabana,
And as they continued their trek through the mall,
Gus said, “Why don’t we go pay a visit to Santa?
He’s right up these stairs, down the second floor hall.”
As they sat on Saint Nick’s belly,
Beneath his beard so snowy white,
He said, “Have the two of you been naughty?
Or have you boys this year been nice?”
... As they waited in the lobby,
... Those dogs were most polite,
... And though Max liked color copies,
... He let Gus choose black and white.
Then those dogs were filled with fear,
As they turned around and saw Chief Dan.
And as he leaned toward Santa’s ear,
He said, “Two finer dogs there’ve never been.”
As I woke up from my dream,
I found that I was undeserving.
Yet every day He makes me clean,
Because He gladly carried my burden.
When Christmas Day draws near,
I’ll try not to focus on the presents,
For the greatest gift is my sins cleared,
So I can live forever in His presence.
