PET SHOP

It was early morning at the station,
Gus was wakened by some voices.
From the next room, a conversation ---
“I'm afraid we've got no other choices.”

“Don't you think that's rather drastic,
For a dog who won't obey?
We could send him back to classes,
There's got to be another way.”

“No, I've already called the pet store,
There's not much to discuss.
Please pull our truck 'round to the back door,
While I go wake up Gus.”

Gus ducked beneath the blanket,
And tried his best to act asleep.
When Chief came in to wake him,
He didn't make a single peep.

“Gus, ol' boy!
It's time to wipe your sleepy eyes.
Today's a special day,
And we've got a big surprise!”

Gus was not a dummy,
And he wasn't falling for that trick.
The knots tightened in his tummy,
And he felt most horribly sick.

As Chief dragged him to the engine,
Gus had never felt so much betrayed.
I wish I knew what that dog was thinking...
He's just not himself today.

As they walked into the pet shop,
Gus thought he'd rather die.
To the floor he felt his heart drop,
And he tearfully waved goodbye.

“Gus! Stop these silly acts,
And put an end to all the fuss!
Go and meet your new friend Max,
He's coming home to live with us.”

To Chief's arms Gus quickly hurried,
As his spirits lifted up.
For Gus had been all worried,
Over a tiny Beagle pup.
