DALMATIAN CELEBRATION

It was a cheerful fire station,
The mood that day was fun.
We had a great big celebration,
For Gus was turning one.

Our station swelled with joy again,
Even our Chief was rather proud.
Gus was a shining star that day,
And his head was in the clouds.

He thought we’d missed his birthday,
He slid down the pole and it was dark.
No trucks were in that empty bay,
A note said, “went to fight a fire by the park.”

He strolled into the kitchen,
And as he rubbed his sleepy eyes,
There was Chief and all us men,
And we shouted out, “Surprise!”

Among the guests were Smoke and Dusty,
From Station 5 on South Louisiana,
And Gus’s old pal Rusty,
From the plains of east Montana.

A great big card from Mister Mayor,
And seven red balloons.
We even had a baseball player,
And a DJ playing birthday tunes.

We made a peanut butter birthday cake,
And some chocolate mint ice cream.
Gus ate until his tummy ached,
While his face with pride did beam.

They put on fancy party hats,
And at once the fun began.
They took swings at the piñata cat,
And played pin the tail on the delivery man.

It was time to open presents,
The dogs had all been fed.
But Gus picked up a brand new scent,
And wolfed down Chief’s hamburger instead!

The party was a great success,
His last present was unwrapped.
Gus said goodbye to all his guests,
And then curled up for a nap.

We finished up our cleaning chores,
And when the floors had all been swept,
We took Gus to the corner store,
To get the filmed developed.

“Black and white or color photos?”
The clerk asked him for his preference.
Gus scratched his head and twitched his cold wet nose,
“Why, I can’t tell the difference!”

I woke up from my dream to find,
That party was for me.
For there was a time when I was blind,
But now I clearly see.

Angels rejoice in Heaven,
When sinners turn to Christ.
It’s in Luke 15:7,
God’s Word is most precise.
