Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Seffy Englander and I am a scout from Shevet
Dizengoff, Tel-Aviv. Right now I'm in the United States as a part of the "Israeli Scouts Summer
Delegation" Program.
This program consists of 80 senior (12th graders) Israeli boy and girl scouts and 2 junior
(11th graders) scouts who serve as counselors in summer camps throughout the United States.
The senior scouts came back to Israel at the end of the summer, but the junior scouts (which
one of whom is me) stayed in the U.S for 3 more months of involvement in Young Judaea and in
the jewish community.
Young Judaea ("Yehuda Hatzair" in Hebrew) is the Israeli scouts' sister movment in the U.S, and
because of that , there are a lot of similarities between the two movements, so I didn't really
have a lot of problems to adjust myself. During the summer I was a counselor in camp Sprout
Lake in N.Y together with Liron Talmi. We were the two Israeli scouts in camp. We tried to
make our life at camp as close as we could to the scouts' summer camps in Israel, so we had
"mifkad" every morning and every evening, we built a flag pole ("toren"),and we even had our
own "tzofiut" hut which is where we ran our scouts activities.
Moreover, from time to time, when there was a special event, at camp we prepered a fire sign
("ktovet esh") and lighted it in front of the entire camp. We did a lot of other cool stuff that
I can tell you all about and even show you some more pictures of when I will come back to
Israel. After that, when Liron and all the other senior scouts came back to Israel, at the
beginning of September, I was sent to New Jersey and I'm staying here till December.
What I've been doing is being very involved in the local jewish community, and mostly with
Young Judaea. In the meantime when I don't do that, I'm a student at the East Brunswick High
School. I'm also living with a host family. Being away from home for such a long time is very
difficult, especially when your friends are not with you. However, the fact that I'm here as a
part of a scout which is what I like to do the most in my life, makes it a lot easier for me.
I can't wait to come back to the Shevet already and start working in my new position.
