Thank you for visiting our website!  These are my two little cuties Dixie and Brisco.  Dixie we have had since she was about 5 weeks old (she was born in 1996) and Brisco we have had since 1998 when he was 2 (he was also born in 1996).  Dixie and Brisco get their names primarily from a t.v. show we use to watch several years ago called "The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr."   Brisco's name is obvious... Dixie's name we actually got from two places.  One, there was a character on "The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr." named Dixie Cousins -- she was Brisco's girlfriend.  The second place we got Dixie's name is my dad had a dog named Dixie when he was a kid who was named after a dog my grandmother had as a child.  So, Dixie is a third generation Dixie!

Brisco originally hails from Atlanta, Georgia and came to us with the name of Duke.  We teased with the idea at first that we would just call him Duke, but he never would respond to that name.  I guess he didn't understand our pronunciation of his name.  (The lady who owned him before had a great Southern Accent!)  So, we re-named him Brisco.  He recognized his new name within days.  Maybe he just wanted a new name with a new home?!  Brisco has been an absolute joy in our lives and I can't imagine us without him now.  He is a very reserved dog.. but he has really come out of his shell in the last year or so.  And I am very proud and happy to say, I think I am his favorite.  (It was a blow to my ego several years ago when I realized that my husband was Dixie's favorite parent!)

The way I found shibas a few years ago was this.  I was looking through dog books trying to find the 'perfect breed' for me and my then fiance.  (now husband.) I found a reference in a book about a strange little dog that had tendencies to walk across tabletops like a cat.  This peaked my interest.  I researched the breed and thought they would be the 'perfect breed' for us.  So, after we got married and I finished school, we found a breeder and went and visited, fell in love with a little girl pup and the rest is history.  We picked up Dixie on New Years Eve of 1996.

Now for my sermon here.  Shibas are not for everyone.  They are a very difficult, stubborn and independant breed.  This can be a big shock for you if you aren't ready for this.  I even thought that we had made a mistake at first with Dixie.  She is by far the most painful, difficult dog I have ever had. But now, I wouldn't trade her little ways for anything.  I have become one of the converted! If you are still interested in shibas, I would recommend reading up on the breed.  A couple of books I recommend:  The Total Shiba by Gretchen Haskett; Shibas by Richard Tomita.  Also, I'd recommend going to a dog show and talking to some breeders/handlers and talk to them about the breed or pick up either a 'Dog World' or a 'Dog Fancy' magazine and look in the back in the classified sections and call some breeders and talk to them about Shibas. And of course, I'd recommend meeting some shibas just to see for yourself how painful they can be!  And how wonderful too.  :)  Good luck!!
