| In 1996 Ditch moved to WA and began studying drama at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). Whilst studying there he played a range of roles in stage acting. He graduated in 1998. His pictures are still on the walls at the academy. He is one of WAAPA'S most sucessful graduates. Soon after Ditch left WA he got his first acting gig on a Wrigley's Eclipse chewing gum ad. After this he scored guest roles on Australian dramas such as All Saints, Above the law, Water Rats, and Do or Die (telemovie) In early 2001 Ditch auditioned for the role of Evan Jones on Blue Heelers. He had been working in an inner-Sydney pub and never thought he would get the part on Blue Heelers. Ditch knew he faced stiff competition. "Everyone was going for it. They knew it was for a regular role and every actor wanted it." Three auditions later Ditch's efforts were rewarded when he landed the role of Jonesy. But he had to make changes, not only did he have to quit his job as a part-time barman in Sydney and move to Melbourne, he was required to cut his long blonde surfie hair and die it brown. Like many other cast members of Blue Heelers, Ditch did some police training at the Victorian Police Academy. This gave him a new respect for the force, "I didn't really know much about the police," he says. "But I spent a couple of weeks going out on patrols and talking to coppers. I even did half a day at the detective training school and that was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. The stuff that they deal with is just amazing. I definitely have a new level of respect that wasn't there before, because of this." Ditch's first episode made a good impression straight away with woman all over Australia falling head over heels in love with him and after filming just 2 episodes of the show, Ditch said that he started to feel at home on the notoriously friendly set. "Everyone has been supportive," he says. "It's often hard adding a new element to a family, and that's how I felt at first. I felt I was coming into an already established family. But everyone's been very welcoming and I'm having fun." In 2002 Ditch's great acting talents payed off when he won the silver logie for Most Popular new Male Talent. In the Blue Heelers summer break at the end of 2002 Ditch continued to swing back and forth between Melbourne and Perth to play the role of Dennis Ziegler in This is our Youth, a particularly popular play with the WA audiences. Ditch made the trip to Perth every year to suppot the children's charity Telethon, he still does! |
