B CONNECTED, Volume 4, November 2000

From District Governor Larrie's Desk

Lion Pam and I have just completed a most memorable month. As many of you are probably aware, we became grandparents for the first time on October 2 when our daughter, Mikaela Wolgemuth, presented us with a 9lb. 1 1/2 oz grandson Ryland Thomas. I can only warn you lookout for Lion Pam, she is usually armed with a briefcase size album of pictures and is always on the lookout for someone she can corner to share these pictures.

This month I made official visits to the following Lions Clubs: St. Albert Breakfast [October 10], Edmonton Millwoods [October 10], Edmonton Northgate [October 11], The Lions Club of Sherwood Park [October 17], Sherwood Park Breakfast [October 18], Athabasca [October 19], Edmonton Southgate [October 23], Edmonton Jolly Fellows [October 24], and Gibbons [October 25]. We had the honour of inducting 9 Lions during these visits. A most unique experience was the induction of PCC Lion Gordie Topps who rejoined Lions as a member of the Athabasca Lions Club.

Lion Pam and I also had the pleasure of attending the 71st Charter of the Edmonton Host Club on October 20 and the District 37F Convention on October 27th and 28th . It was great to have five members of Edmonton Westmount join us at our meeting with Athabasca. I also wish to thank the six members of the St. Albert Host who visited the Gibbons Lions Club on the evening of my visit. Lion Pam and I sincerely appreciate your support. We also wish to thank each of the Clubs for the hospitality shown to us and for their support of the Lions Foundation of Canada and the Lions 5 Park Tough Guy Run during our visits.

On October 15, I participated in the 22 kilometer Lions 5 Park Tough Guy Run. I can accurately say that I was the second Lion to complete the course, and that I was not the last runner to cross the finish line. I wish to thank the many lions and other sponsors who supported my participation with $3593.00 in pledges for Camp He Ho Ha. Thanks to all of you.

During my visit to the Edmonton Jolly Fellows Lions Club, President John Bohonos announced that their Club had received a Legacy in Lions Award from Lions Clubs International for achieving a 21% increase in membership. Congratulations.

District 37F has been selected as one of 20 Districts in the world to pilot District Rebuilding. District Governor Bill Garrett has selected our very own PID Bill Webber to lead their project. It was most informative to sit in on one of their planning sessions during their District Convention. We all wish District Governor Bill and his Committee every success. I am sure all Districts in MD 37 will benefit from their experience. I also wish to thank District Governor Bill and the Lions of 37F for the hospitality extended to Lion Pam and myself during their Convention.

As harvest season is essentially over, I will be starting to visit the clubs in farming communities. I had delayed visits to these Clubs to avoid conflict with the harvest season. I hope all those in farming had a plentiful harvest and that the grades are good.
