Celebrating 75 years in M.D. 37 The Lion year 2001-2002 will be the Diamond anniversary year of Lionism in MD37. The Lions Legacy is a celebration of our 75 years of service throughout Multiple District 37. A proud history deserving of celebration, a celebration which invites every Lions club to participate, a history and celebration to be shared with our communities. To mark this milestone in service the Council of Governors is developing a scholarship program in which every club will be encouraged to participate. It is our strong belief that such a program, professionally organized, presented in a consistent and professional manner across this great multiple district, will bring new awareness and recognition of the many services provided by all Lions clubs. Work is underway in developing a club kit that would contain public service announcements, application forms, school posters and other material that will describe the scholarship program and our proud seventy-five year history. Many clubs offer scholarship programs on an ongoing basis. We invite you to review the material when it arrives and consider integrating for this one year, at least one Lions Legacy Scholarship. Watch for more information.
On September 14, the Royal Alexandra Foundation invited Edmonton and area Lions Clubs to attend an information session about the proposed Regional Eye Research Institute at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. To date, a number of Lions Clubs have signified their support for the project. According to Foundation Executive Director Andrew Otway, "Lions are best known nationally and internationally for their sight-related programs, including SightFirst, the world's largest blindness prevention program. It is appropriate that the Royal Alexandra Foundation work closely with Lions Clubs in support of the Regional Eye Research Institute". "We welcome and appreciate the advice and expertise of the Lions for this very important and worthwhile project and thank them for their support". Over the past two years, members of the Castledowns Lions Club have worked with the Foundation in support of Ophthalmology. While speaking at the information session, Castledowns President Les Coombes remarked, "My experience working with the Royal Alexandra Foundation has brought me into contact with people who are experts in the area of Ophthalmology". "I have learned that the Alex is a world-leader in the care and treatment of eye disease. I also know that, through its affiliation with the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine, the Alex is also a center for training and educating tomorrow's caregivers". A research facility, in addition to the clinical practice and medical education already at the Royal Alexandra, will have far-reaching benefits, said Coombes, adding, "I am looking forward to supporting this project. I see this as an effective use of my time, energy and commitment that will ultimately result in better ways to prevent, treat- and possibly even cure- many types of eye diseases". The focus of each November is to increase awareness of diabetes and diabetic eye disease to those people at risk. Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of eye problems that people with diabetes may face as a complication of the disease -- diabetic retinopathy, cataract and glaucoma. (Cataract and glaucoma also affect many people who do not have diabetes.) Throughout November, Lions clubs are encouraged to step-up their awareness efforts by hosting an eye screening or some other community project. Lions Clubs International has programs and partnerships already in place. One such program, the Lions Eye Health Program (LEHP) enables Lions clubs to have a major impact in their communities in the fight against the two leading causes of blindness in developed countries: diabetic eye disease and glaucoma. LEHP offers an excellent brochure. For more information contact: Lion Art Petterson
