Belle is the headsrong heroine of the story - the Beauty. She longs for more than a normal boring life in a small 'provincial town', where all the girls dream to marry someone like Gaston. In an extremly brave move, Belle makes a bargain with the Beast, she is willing to take the place of her father as the Beast's prisoner. Although the Beast has the key to her prison, he doesn't have the key to her heart and her spirit will not also be kept a prisoner. Belle hates the Beast at first, but after he risks his own life to save Belle's she begins to see past the vicious exterior. She realises that deep inside of him there might be more than either one had ever dreamed of before. Belle loves books, and is thrilled when the Beast gives her the massive library in the castle. Belle loves her father very much and would do almost anything to stop him being taken away by the local insane asylum. Near the end of the film, Belle tells the Beast that she loves him, just as he is about to die, transforming him from the hideous beast into the handsome prince that he once was.
Belle's live action model was Sherri Stoner, and the voice was played by Paige O'Hara
Back to the Top Gaston is the self-adoring, marrow minded villian of the movie. He is the
big hunk, who all the normal girls want to marry, except Belle. Gaston
wants to marry Belle because as far as he's concerned, she's the best because
she's the most beautiful, and only the best is good enough for such an
intimidating specimen of manyly masculinity. He sees himself as the best at
everything, fighting, spitting, drinking, and plotting - surprising for someone
who can't read a book without pictures in it. He is angry when
Belle turns him down flat, and vows that he WILL have her for his wife, much
to the upset of the other girls in the town. He doesn't care what he has to do
to get her, in the latter stages of the film, Gaston, plans to throw Maurice -
Belle's father into the insane asylum, unless she'll marry him. Gaston did not
exist in the original story - "La Belle et la Bete", Gaston was added to fulfil the role of a villian
and create a stronger sense of danger.
Richard White is the voice of Gaston.
The Beast was cursed by an enchantress because he has no love in his heart and
transformed into a terrible beast. The terrible spell can only be broken when
he can learn to truly love another and can earn the love of another. All seems
lost until Belle is brought into the picture. The Beast however is angry and
hopeless as he has been kept in the castle as a beast for so long, he tries to
win Belle's love with fear rather than kindness. Gradually through her
courage and compassion, he starts to discover the secrets of his own heart and
learns that even a beast can be loved. The Beast's key animator was Glen Keane,
who spent months surrounded by a menagerie of animals for inspiration.
Robby Benson is the voice artist for the Beast
Lumiere is the slightly extravagant host of the castle, who has been turned
into a candlestick in the enchantment. He likes to please the ladies, and is
often seen canoodling with the French Maid Bimbette. Lumiere is often seen
arguing with Cogsworth, the enchanted clock, but deep down we know that they
are very good pals. Lumiere often likes to sing and dance and is brilliant at it
too, as can be seen in the 'Be Our Guest' sequence.
Jerry Orbach is the voice of Lumiere.
Cogsworth is the slightly eccentric enchanted clock. He's always the one who
has reservations, but deep down inside he knows that things will turn out all
right in the end, his best friend is probably Lumiere, but he probably wouldn't
admit that! He's always worried that his master - the beast will shout at him
and is the last one to let loose - this is evident in the "Be Our Guest" scene.
David Ogden Stiers is the voice of Cogsworth.
Maurice is the loving father of Belle, he is brilliant inventor, although the
local villagers don't think that, they think he's a crazy old loon, but Belle
sees him as nothing more than a genius. He is the original prisoner of the Beast, as
he wanders into the Beast's castle when he gets lost on the way to an inventions
fair. However Belle is extremely brave and swaps places with him. Maurice cannot
get the villagers to believe that a hideous beast has taken Belle prisoner and they
just laugh it off, believing that the crazy old fool is making it up.
Mrs Potts and Chip are the lovable characters of the film, Mrs Potts is
a friendly enchanted teapot, and Chip is her son, one of many! Mrs Potts is
always there to offer advice and support to both Belle and the Beast. Chip
is a very cute lovable character. Chip was only intended to have one line originally,
but because the producers loved the voice so much, they gave him more lines.
Angela Lansbury is the voice of Mrs Potts Back to the Home Page

LeFou is Gaston's right hand man, he will do anything for him, fetch his beer and
fetch his shoes, he even sings him a song to cheer him up after Belle refuses to
be his wife. LeFou often happily takes a beating, when Gaston is displeased by
something he's done. LeFou, along with all the other villagers think that
Maurice is crazy. LeFou, is rather a pathetic creature, who would probably die
if Gaston wasn't around!
