When technology is discussed I consider things scientific, yet most technology is evident as simple tools. I never thought of it as cookware, carpeting or plastic, but it was all around me. The first technology that fascinated me was the simple use of a flashlight, a magnifying glass or a telescope. They opened new posibilities and perspectives on the design of the world in which we live. I guess the bicycle, as a technological tool was the most valuable to me. It transported me to places far away in a manner that I alone controlled. It was also a status symbol to have a Schwinn Stingray, which was pretty cool. What I lacked in appreciation of the evolution of this technology was made up by what the media offered me: a vision of desire. As I became socially conscious, music became increasingly desirable. My next treasure of technology was the invention of the transistor radio, which I procured for starts on my paper route. It was many a cold and dreary morning when the only solice I found was in the groovy a.m. hits from station KFXM in San Bernardino. |
