News
Aug. 29 2001- Today, after I woke up, got my robe on, took my cold shower, and smoked my morning pipe, I went outside to retrieve the newspaper, and to my surprise, I saw the headline, "Officers not charged".
And so I think to myself,"Officers not charged? What ever can this mean?", so as I read on, I start to remember that last year (2000), on July 14th, there was a
man brutally beaten by 14 Philadelphia police officers (all at
the same time). This picture was taken from a news hellicopt-
er (without the cops knowing), and as you can see, these off-
icers just want to inflict pain upon Thomas Jones.
Jones(picture left) was being chased, bec-
                            ause of a 12 day  carjacking, a robbery s-
pree, punching an innocent 12 year old kid
in the fa-ce, and hitting a lady over the he-
ad and taking her groceries. However, (in
my opinion) it did not call for 46 shots to
be fired (between ten cops) in a residential
area.
When the cops finnally did catch him, Officer Cedric Gaines said, "I should kill you"(click
here to find out his personal records), and since Jones was high on cocaine, and horse tranks at the  time, he was fueled by adrenaline, thus leading him to resist the arrest, and run away. Then they caught him again. This time he stole the police car, and when they caught him AGAIN, they made CERTAIN that he wouldn't get away. Well, at least I would think that you wouldn't be able to do much of anything with cops jumping on you, kicking you, beating you, THROWING CAR RADIOS AT YOU.
They made him un-concious, so they dragged him under a tree about 30 feet away from the patrol car, waiting for him to wake up. When he finnaly did wake up, they started beating, kicking, punching, and jumping on him, again.
The Grand Jury rejected Jones' testimonies and said that it was "unworthy of belief". Victoria Bryant Jones, Jones' wife, brings up an interesting point saying, "Why can't they be charged for attempted murder or recklessly endangering another person? Why? Because they're wearing a badge. They're in the system. they're all together."
I do think that what Thomas Jones did was VERY wrong, and I DO think that he should be arrested. ARESSTED, not beat down maliciously several times.
the news goes in order from top to bottom from newest to oldest.

Profiling and discontents
N.J. case a mirror of racism

On Jan. 14 former N.J. State troopers John hogan & James Kenna pleaded guilty to MUCH REDUCED charges arising from a 1998 incident on the N.J. Turnpike in which the troopers fired 11 shots at a vanload of unarmed African Americans, and Latinos. Each trooper gave up his job, and was ordered to pay $280.
None of that lays to rest the sickness behind racial profiling. It doesn't begin to. Early in life I realized that, as an African American (this is Terry Johnson speaking), I was at war with the Police.
I can recall my Uncles & cousins sitting around, planning trips down South along the routes that would avoid the most racist cops in Indiana, Georgia, or even my own home state of Michigan. I quickly learned that this wasn't a war between a few racist cops & African Americans.
This bloody, still raging contest pits a racist idealogy against a people who have been systematically denied justice & peace. While disagreeing the sentence given to the troopers, I beleive Judge Charles A. Delehey was right when he said they "were victims of the system that employed them." But I DON'T beleive Delehey- or many other whites from that matter- know the true extent of America's system of racism.
America's system of white supremacy is so deeply embedded- still today- that it is often difficult to detect. Even our language helps conceal it's persuasive nature. From my point of view, the term "racial profiling", which became exposed (for some folx) following the turnpike shooting, makes Police racism seem nothing more than an uncontrolled, unfortunate, and "right" way to obtain criminals. All this meanness seems too crude to fit into the neat little category called "racial profilling".
African Americans, Latinos, and Asian Americans have been screaming about police racism for years. Members of the Black Panthers started carrying guns and following POlice patrols because of the law enforcement war unleashed on the black community. We've seen the Window Washin' Charlie shot down. An unarmed man at 30th street  station, he too, wsa shot at by Police bullets. Donta Dawson's family has learned the cruel meaning of the term "justifiable Police shooting".
While in this post September 11th era, the media (both in news & entertainment), work full tilt to portray the police as heroes. African Americans have long known the Police to be the violent (almost fascist) arm of Government authority. What people do in the streets is no different from what insurance campany executives, corporate managers, law makers, university professors, and the media do behind closed doors. All work in concert to deny African Americans jobs, health care, decent housing, & high quality education.
The $280 in fines charged to the troopers were probably barely enough to pay for the bullets fired at the van's occupants...
Our Nation has fooled itself by arrogantly beleiving that it is fair and just , and that the democratic project has fullfilled its promise...
If the events on the New Jersey Turnpike reflect anything, it's the sad failure of America's "democratic project". Our democracy is a lie, a cash only privilage for sale to the highest bidder. In this society controlled by the rich, all people are not treated equally. Race, class, and gender have have everything in the world to do with how "justice" is dispensed...
