Leaving Portland: Plat 2 and the Dirky Crate

April 30 - May 3 2004, Total Distance 1165 miles, 1864 km

Planning my move to Canada was lots of fun...I had to be out of the US by midnight on Friday April 30th, but did not have permission to enter Canada yet on Monday of the same week. After pulling some strings at the Canadian Consulate in Seattle, they called me Monday afternoon to say that my work permit was approved. So Tuesday Charley and I built the crate to transport Jane's Plat 2, Wednesday we had a going away party at the NSI and I cleaned up my Mac in the lab (finally found a solution to convert my Mac mailboxes to PC at 2 in the morning), Thursday morning we loaded Plat 2 in the truck at the NSI, it took me all afternoon to load all my stuff at home. The truck was 3 feet shorter than I expected...thank god we built a decent crate !! Friday move-out inspection in my appartment. Then I had to take the truck back to Uhaul because the cargo and cabin lights and radio were not working. I left Portland on Friday at 12 noon and cleared customs at the Blaine/Surrey border crossing at 10 PM...2 hours before my visa expired. Perfect timing.

Building a crate to protect Jane's Platform 2...took us a day but it was a solid as a rock. Charley came up with some good ideas !! Group picture around the crate after the going away party. Thank y'all for the nice presents and for signing the lid, luckily customs did not charge extra for importing "artwork". PS Mary, I WILL rent the movie !

Plat 2 goes in the truck at the NSI loading dock with help Charley, Andy, Nancy and Kuifu. Thanks for all your help guys ! Jane says goodbye to her Plat 2 and postdoc. Thanks again Jane for everything !

Find the crate...burried underneath my stuff...truck was smaller than I expected...thang God we built a decent crate ! Truck and trailer on the road. The strong engine has no problems in the mountains but emergency stops to capture that great photo are a bit of a problem.

Friday 10 PM, all set after a couple visits to customs, broker, and immigration. Everything went as planned...happy to avoid this route !
