| The Ball at La Rose: Mr. Thomas Montgomery danced the first dance with Helen Woodruff and was quite intrigued by her ability to "see the beauty around her." Lord Geoffrey Winchester made made quite an appearance in his efforts to be introduced to Miss Eliza Montgomery. Miss Caecilia de la Salle stood up quite proudly to G.W. He then went on to dance with E.M. They had a rather philosophical conversation, which ended with G.W. asking to call on E.M. the next day. Miss Kate Ballard danced with Mr. Dominic Forster. Miss Amelia Leyman made an unexpected (even to herself) entrance to the ball. Jules de la Salle was quite intrigued by Miss Josephine Collins, and paid her many attentions. He offered her to dance the cotillion. Josephine's cousin, Oliver, accused J.d. of insincerity and other crimes. J.d. then went so far as to propose to J.C., after only knowing each other for one night. The two made many confessions, ending with J.C. disappointing J.d. and leaving the ball. There was also some rather inappropriate conduct in the way of C.d. and G.W.'s behavior. There was much flirting. They danced the cotillion together. E.M. retreated to an orchard, where she was accompanied by H.W. Mr. Chester Steed's sister Annabelle, who was also making her entrance tonight, made quite a scene as she staggered and fell, drunkenly, in the middle of the floor. There have been a few slight suspicions as to A.L.'s involvement in the situation. Miss Catherine Woodruff came to A.S.'s aid. A.L. reminded T.M. of certain arrangements in a conversation, which triggered him to join his sister in the orchard and make several confessions to him, before E.M. complained of a headache and they departed. C.d. kindly extended the offer to A.S. to stay at La Rose. This was gratefully accepted. C.d. promised to visit Harker Hall on the next day to go riding. K.B. also took her leave after carrying on a conversation with Miss Lydia Forster. K.B. sadly returned to see her father's death. She took some time herself outside to grieve before returning to her mother. The Woodruff sisters left before their father; the Colonel was withdrawn into a room full of cards and drinking. Only after everyone had left, did Colonel Woodruff leave in a state of drunkeness. He was involved in a most unfortunate accident involving his horse while riding home. His present condition is not yet known. T.M. made the resolution to call upon H.W. the following day and tell her of his situation.... |
