My Area

Several of my online friends have asked me where I live and what the surrounding area is like.

Foolish people, to give me an opening like this. Some of the information is found else- where on my site. Have you found it yet? Go look later.I’ll try not to repeat myself too much.

I live in Michigan,USA.
No, not a big city like Detroit or Lansing. Small communities. Close knit. Seems almost everyone knows who you are, or knows someone whose cousin’s aunt is married to one of your male relatives. If someone has recently moved into the area, they usually have friends or relatives already in residence or soon will have.

We have our share of crime. But where in a big city you hear about it and think,
     "There goes the neighborhood…"
Around here the response is,
"Who did you say that happened to?!?
I was just talking with them the other day!!"

Depending on what has happened, the community rallies around. Offering support and whatever is needed. Food, shelter, money, clothing. Emergency childcare or transportation.People willing to listen, to comfort. For the person who committed the crime, let’s just say, I hope it is never you!

Do you belong to any clubs?
We offer Eagles, Lions, Kiwanis, Masons, Zontas and many more.

As for the area.

Gentle hills. Usually covered in maple, pine, and oak. You name it. Small towns, villages or single family dwellings, nestled in the valleys. Open fields and pastureland.

Winding riversLake Michigan and many beautiful inland lakes for fishing, swimming, boating. Just for enjoying.

Fruit farms. Apple, peach, strawberry, cherry. Oh those spring blossoms!

Some people, think we roll up the sidewalks
and go into hibernation, after the summer.
OH, PLEASE!

Fall is Beautiful around here. Remember all those trees? Color tours!

Like Lighthouses?
We have several in the area. Come see.

Like snow How much?
Great ski resorts. Ice fishing. Skating.      Snowmobiling.

Want museums?
We have some very nice ones.

Nearby hospitals, good schools. Two colleges within commuting distance.

You say, you would miss the Opera, ballet, theatre. How often do you really go?

Want music? I mean Real music?
Check out Interlochen Arts Academy. Interlochen info

Or try our wonderful local talent. Community theatre, Chorus, musicians. Some exciting talent is hidden within my neighbors.

Really into the Great Outdoors?

Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore,
(The Dunes), is just up the road.
Info

Like to climb? Take long hikes?

Walk out to overlook Lake Michigan. There are national forests all around.

Like to watch the wildlife?
Are you a birdwatcher?

Ever watch a pileated woodpecker build it’s home in a tree in your front yard?

Or drive along the highway and see cars
pulled over to the side so they can watch a blue heron going about it’s business?

How about looking out your living room window and catching a pair of fox, snitching the bread crust you tossed out for the birds?

Wild turkeys, under your birdfeeder?
Deer grazing in your garden?

Come sit on my deck in mid summer, just at twilight, and observe our bobcat stroll past. Taking it’s dear sweet time as you hardly breathe.

Have a small pet?
Watch out for those turkey buzzard’s, gliding overhead. One swoop and they have an afternoon snack!
Mwahahahah Opps. Sorry!

Do you like to walk in the woods, searching for the elusive Morel mushroom?

'The Mushroom Festival'
is at Mesick, in May.

Speaking of Festivals, we have plenty!
They run from one day like

'The Blueberry festival'

Which raises money for the enhancement of
        a local nursing facility
        (where I have worked since’77),

to the week long
'National Cherry Festival'
in Grand Traverse County.
Cherry Festival info

You like art?
Local artists display at the many art fairs.
Plus..many world reknowned artists are hiding in the neighborhood.

Ever wonder how that cherry pie got in your freezer?
Well, our local Farm Bureau and an area church, hold a Cherry Field Day.It acquaints area residents and visitors of cherry production from the orchard through harvesting and processing. Products like dried cherries, canned piefilling and IQF
(individually quick frozen) whole pitted cherries.

After touring the orchard and the processing plant, you head back to the church to enjoy favorite local treats.Made with cherries, of course.

My goodness, so many things I want to tell you.I can’t cover them all.

BUT, if you have stayed with me this far and
you want more information, you could always go to www.benzie.com and check out their website.
