| Shield figures are widely distributed throughout western and central Colorado. The lack of shield figures in southeastern Colorado has not been adequately explained. A total of 10 shield figures are currently listed in this database, representing only a small portion of shield figures present in the state. One problem with analyzing the shield figures of Colorado is that many of the historic (Ute) panels incorporating shield figures, such as Red Army Rockshelter, adopt a convention of depicting linear series of numerous, crudely drawn shield figures showing little variation. This causes serious problems in modeling and computing spatial density, as one small panel may contain dozens of small, unadorned shield figures. So far, a total of 8 shield figures from 3 sites are included in the database, and many more are processing. If you have any additional information or are aware of any other shield figures from Colorado, I'd love to hear from you! |
