Arizona
Shield bearing warriors are uncommon but well distributed throughout the northern half of Arizona. Stylistically, many of these figures compare more favorably with examples from southern Utah and Nevada than with Rio Grande Style figures found in New Mexico. Shield bearers from Arizona have been ascribed to several cultural groups, beginging with the Anasazi of the Great Pueblo Period. Other historic groups thought to be responsible for the motif in Arizona include the Navajo and Shoshone/Comanche. The database currently contains 5 shield figures from 3 sites, all from Canyon DeChelley. About a dozen more are awaiting scanning. If you have any questions, comments, or know of other shield bearers in Arizona, I'd love to hear about them.
