Remarkable

Prologue

It seems like yesterday, but it couldn’t be less than eight years ago. I was eleven or twelve, a little naive and an utter romantic. I was sleeping over at a friend’s house and we had decided to play Ouija, a game in which you communicated with a spirit, by the spirit spelling out letters that were written on a game board. The spirit communicated through a movable arrow-like object that you controlled with your fingers.

I can remember that my friend and I were very nervous that night. We didn’t know what to expect.

“Okay. Let’s ask something,” Lisa whispered.

“Okay but what?” Toria whispered back.

“Something about love!” Lisa giggled.

“I know what to ask. Great spirit-” another giggle escaped from Lisa. “Lisa don’t interrupt! Great Spirit will Lisa and Adam Messing ever kiss?”

Lisa gasped. “Toria!”

Toria just grinned until the grin was wiped off her face by the sudden movement of the arrow beneath their fingers being directed to yes.

They both gasped, looking at each other with bright eyes.

Lisa glared at Toria. “Did you move it?”

Toria exclaimed. “No! I swear! Did you?”

“No way! This is creepy.”

Toria looked intently at the board. If this was for real, then she only had one question she wanted the answer to.

“Lisa do you swear on your life that you aren’t moving it?” she demanded.

“I swear on my life,” Lisa swore, and crossed her heart for extra proof.

“Okay, well...I have something to ask.” She took a deep breath and spoke so softly that Lisa had to move her head closer to hear her. “Great Spirit. Do I have a soulmate?”

The arrow moved: Yes.

“Can you please spell out his name?”

The arrow moved again: Yes.

Lisa whispered. “Ooh, I want to ask that too!”

Toria ignored her and watched the arrow move to the letters.

...C...U...R...L...Y...

Lisa giggled. “Curly? His name is curly?”

“What does this mean?” Toria asked the spirit. The arrow didn’t move. “Please tell me!” The board remained quiet.

“I think the ghost is gone Toria. I’m getting tired! Let’s try again another night!”

Toria took one last look at the board and finally nodded.

I can remember lying in bed, not being able to sleep and just thinking about what the spirit had told me. We never did end up playing Ouija again. Time went by and things changed and we grew up. I can never forget the moment though, even though I don’t believe in that stuff anymore.
