(same place) ~~~ Crash (In sync cont’d) “You
boys are very lucky. That was a very serious accident.” “We
realize that officer,” Chris acknowledged The
boys nodded as they sat facing Officer McLean at the hospital. “Look
officer we’re grateful that this turned out well but we’d like to keep this
under wraps. We don’t want publicity coming out of this,” Justin stated. McLean
gave Justin an arched glanced. “Well from what you boys told me about the
accident, you all tried to stop the boy from getting in the car. If this does
get out you’ll look like saints.” “It
doesn’t matter. We don’t want this kind of publicity,” Justin affirmed. “All
right. I’ll see what I can do,” McLean said nodding. “So
where is the guy?” Chris asked. “He’s
being questioned by one of my colleagues right now. He’s lucky, like you boys
he didn’t get hurt.” “What
about the person our car hit?” Joey asked. “She’s
not doing as well. She has a slight concussion and some abrasions. She hasn’t
woken up yet. If she doesn’t wake up, there’s cause for worry. But the
doctors are hopeful that she’ll be okay.” “Shit!”
Justin said angrily. McLean
patted him on the back. “You guys go home now and get some rest. I’ll call
you tomorrow to let you know what’s happening.” Justin
turned to him and asked. “Where’s her room?” McLean
looked at him seriously then said, “The last room down the hall.” McLean
checked his watch. “Now go home. I’ll speak to you all tomorrow.” And with
that he walked away. “I’m
going to go see her,” Justin declared, already making his way towards the
room. “Justin--,”
Chris started. “I’ll
be right back,” Justin said cutting him off. When
he got to the door he took a deep breath and walked inside. As he stepped
quietly into the room and closed the door behind him, he noticed the quietness
of the room. A silence only penetrated by the hammering of his heart. He
breathed in deeply once more. He didn’t know why he was so nervous but as he
made his way towards the still form on the small bed, he realized that his
hands were trembling. Finally
he reached the bed. He gazed at the small figure, his eyes scanning the
washed out and lifeless face. There were bandages covering her arms and head and
her hair was drawn away from her face. Justin
suddenly felt a sharp piercing pain in his chest; maybe if he had tried
harder to stop the guy from driving, he could have prevented this girl from
getting hurt. He
looked back down at her and felt an urgent need to touch her. And with the
palm of his hand he slowly caressed her cheek. He noticed that she was cold
to the touch and again that sharp piercing pain hit him, overwhelming him so
much that it caused tears to water his eyes. He
blinked the tears back and a feeling of incredulity came over him. Why was he
feeling such empathy towards a girl he didn’t even know? He
looked down again and noticed that his hand was still moving softly over her
cheek. He didn’t want to let go. He couldn’t. He
sat down on her bed slowly, listening to the methodical sound of her
breathing. Suddenly her eyes were blinking open and he was gazing into the
most breathtakingly beautiful eyes he had ever seen. As
she blinked her eyes a few more times, it hit him that she was awake. He got
up grinning and made his way outside of the room to tell the doctor the good
news. … Toria’s
head was swimming. There also seemed to be a great pounding in her head. Her
view was also kind of blurry and there seemed to be a curly blond head
bending towards her. She blinked a couple more times to clear her gaze but
when she looked up there was no one there, making her acknowledge that she
must have imagined it all. The
door slowly opened and she turned her head to see a short greying man in a
white coat come in. Her mother was directly behind him. “Mom,”
Toria whispered. And
with that single utterance her mother ran over to her and kissed her on the
forehead. “How are you feeling?” she asked, while clasping Toria’s hand to
her. “Oh
other than having my head feel like it’s about to shatter into a million
pieces, I’m great,” Toria said sardonically. Her
mother and the doctor grinned at her. “Well if you can give snappy retorts, I
know you’ll be okay,” her mother said with a soft smile. “Now
young lady, let’s see how okay you really are,” the doctor said walking over
to her. “It’s
weird how you guys came in so soon after I woke up,” Toria stated. “Oh,
well a young man told us that you were waking up,” he replied. “How
did he know?” Toria inquired. “Well
he was here in the room. You see he feels that he is to blame for the
accident; even though he tried to stop the driver from driving but couldn’t.
Last night the drunk driver hit his car, which in turn hit your car.” “So
that’s what happened,” Toria said softly. “Well please tell him there’s
nothing he could have done.” “I
tried. But headstrong young men, will always be headstrong young men. I must
tell you that he is so upset about the whole thing that he is adamant about
paying the bill. I said no of course to the poor boy He felt so horrible
about the whole thing. Such a nice boy, and quite handsome.” Toria
rolled her eyes at her mother’s handsome comment. Then a thought struck her.
“Did he have curly blond hair?” She asked. “Why
yes he did.” Could it be? she thought! It must have been. So she hadn’t
imagined him afterall. |
