Robert Lask is fine artist from Virginia who develops his unique visions through bold expressive brush strokes and application of collage materials. His work touches on the idea of the obscure and mysterious which he translates as abstract form combining foreign symbols that often emerge from his canvas. Utilizing old techniques derived from his interest in Fauvism, symbolism and abstract impressionism, Robert continues to engage the viewer into his visual environment.

Influences have come for Robert, through his exposure and study of Asian cultures as well as a renewed interest in his own society and culture, Judaism. Motivated by a former Professor, Chinedu Okala, he began to use his paintbrush to “break down” his forms and create his own visual language. After graduating from Norfolk State University with a B.F.A. in Fine Arts, Robert continued to sketch and develop ideas that reflected his visual interpretations of his research.

Through his constant experimentation of different media, Robert began to incorporate foreign typography such as Japanese Kanji and Hebrew Script into his work. These symbols painted as reliefs on the canvas, have become his method of combining his studies of Jewish mysticism, Torah and the Kabbalah. Robert uses these ideals to create a piece that illustrated his Jewish experience.
