BUT IS IT ART?
BUT IS IT ART?
Over the past few months, New York City, known for its high
fashion industry, sophisticated parties and art galleries, has been
invaded by tiny human and solar/electric powered vehicles. The
little vehicles are the creation of Manhattan born
artist/futurist/writer Frank Didik. The contraptions range in
size from the two person solar/human/electric powered Didik Muscle
Car (which gives new meaning to the phrase "Muscle Car") to the 9
passenger Didik "Power to the People" human powered "bus".
Mr. Didik's vehicles bridges the gap between art and technology.
For Mr. Didik art must be more than passive. There are many
facets to art including, visual impact, message impact, innovation,
functional aspects and shock value, to name just a few. For Mr.
Didik, both form and function are very important.
An advertising agency once coined the commercial cliche "It's not
creative, if it doesn't sell". Many would probably differ from
this point of view, including Mr. Didik. Having said that, Mr.
Didik's work not only sells, but it also functions and, it IS
creative. Of course, this reopens the early 1960's
question..."is it art?".
