European history can be discovered in South-East-Flanders. The village of Velzeke used to be an important Roman settlement, as can be seen in the Provincial Archaeological Museum there. And around 1000, the village of Ename got caught in the power struggle between the French Kingdom and the Holy Roman (German) Empire, as told by project Ename974. More information at South-East-Flanders in History.

The belfry of Aalst, the city halls, abbeys and cloisters of Geraardsbergen, Ninove, Oudenaarde, and Ronse (Renaix) bear witness to the rising power of the regional cities during the Ancien Regime.
The industrial revolution of the 19th century not only boosted these cities. Towns with railway connections, such as Zottegem, experienced an important growth.
Industrial archaeology of the region can be admired in the Textile Museum of Ronse, the Tobacco, Matches and Lace Museum in the Abbey Museum of Geraardsbergen, and the gloves room in the Folklore Museum in Zottegem.

The villages and small towns of South-East-Flanders have their own history and charming stories to tell. The unique protestant enclave of Korsele in Horebeke, the Counter Reformation in Bottelare, the tree of liberty in Erpe, the timber frame work of the Crooked Corner in Everbeek, the majestic castle gardens of Leeuwergem, the Wellington Defence Line in Edelare are just a few examples of the hidden treasures in South-East-Flanders.
