GENERAL TOURISTIC INFORMATION
South to the Belgian City of Gent, and pressed between the Rivers Scheldt and Dender, lays South-East-Flanders. Where both rivers are getting closer to each other, to join in the City of Dendermonde, the land is flat and wide. Where they are still wide apart, closer to the language border with French speaking Wallonia, a ravishing region with many hills, valleys and panoramic views arises: the Flemish Ardennes.
THE FLEMISH ARDENNES AND NATURE
Acknowledgement to: Het Burreken
|
The unique nature of the Flemish Ardennes has been recognized by the Government of Flanders. Several areas have been designated as nature domains protected by law. One of them is The Burreken located in a corner of the towns of Brakel, Horebeke and Maarkedal.

The abundant nature is very inviting for amateur sport lovers. Hiking, cycling, horse riding and others are very popular. And, the hills of the Flemish Ardennes are strongly linked with the "Ronde van Vlaanderen" (Tour of Flanders), the greatest cycling event in Flanders.

Tissenhove Mill in Mater
|
The hills and brooks of the Flemish Ardennes gave birth to numerous wind and water mills. The Ijzerkotmolen in Sint-Maria-Latem, the Bossenare Molen in Etihove and the Tissenhovemolen in Mater are examples of active mills.
